Wellington's South Coast Marine Reserve is now a happening thing.

From a little to the west of Lyall Bay to Owhiro Bay, and 2.3km out to sea forms a safe haven for sea life to breed and thrive.  This means no fishing, no Paua (Abalone) collecting, and no removing anything living from this area.

It's not popular with everyone but had to be done to stop the Paua poachers and to give the South Coast a chance to regenerate and refresh.  Fishermen have the rest of the South Coast and the harbour entrance area to fish and gather shellfish.
